Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by illegal traders - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
