Trump Calls for Imprisonment of Chicago Mayor and State Executive as Military Forces Deploy in City

Ex-President Donald Trump on midweek called for the detainment of Mayor Brandon Johnson and Governor JB Pritzker, accusing them of failing to protect federal immigration officers.

"The city's leader should be jailed for endangering Immigration agents!" Trump wrote on social media Wednesday morning. "The Illinois governor as well!"

Both officials identify as the Democratic faction.

Trump's statements come alongside the deployment of state military troops in the Windy City area following directives from the current government, despite vehement protests from state officials including Pritzker and Johnson.

"This marks not the first instance where Trump attempted to have a Black man wrongfully arrested," Johnson responded on that day. "I'm not going put."

The governor responded via social platforms, stating: "I will not back down. Trump is now calling for imprisonment of democratically chosen representatives checking his power. What's next on the path to full-blown authoritarianism?"

As of midweek, military troops from Texas had arrived at the Elwood army reserve center, a military installation roughly 50 miles from the city, as the administration advances with its aggressive urban crime policy and immigration enforcement operations.

Trump has called Chicago a "dangerous disaster zone", even though police data indicate significant drops in many offenses, such as homicides.

On Wednesday, two hundred Texas National Guard troops were expected to deploy to the Chicago area, with another 300 Illinois guard forces preparing to mobilize, according to reports. Officials reportedly stated the troops would not perform law enforcement duties but would secure federal immigration agents and their facilities.

Military personnel wearing uniforms with Texas national guard insignia were spotted at the military facility in Elwood. Vehicles marked "Emergency Disaster Services" delivered portable toilets and essential items. Trailers were set up in rows. Additional fencing was installed around the perimeter.

Aviation authorities ordered flight restrictions over the army reserve center for security reasons until 6 December.

The administration has escalated deportation operations in Chicago in the past month, sparking protests, especially near an processing facility in a Chicago suburb.

On Monday, Illinois and Chicago initiated legal action against the federal government, attempting to halt the National Guard deployment, asking a federal judge to stop what they describe as "Trump's long-declared 'War'" on the city and state, calling it "unlawful and risky".

Legal proceedings on their case is set for the next day.

Mayor Johnson also signed an directive on that day banning federal immigration agents and related personnel from using city-owned property as operation bases for deportation efforts.

The governor has accused the president of using military forces as "staged tools" and "pawns".

During a press briefing on the previous day, Pritzker said that Trump is trying to "rationalize and normalize the presence of military personnel under his direct command."

The historic Posse Comitatus Act restricts the military's role in civilian law enforcement. However, Trump has said he would be willing to activate the emergency powers, which permits a president to dispatch active duty military in states that are unable to put down an uprising or are resisting federal law.

After beginning his second term, Trump has dispatched or discussed sending military units to at least 10 urban centers, including major metropolitan areas and California cities like Oakland, San Francisco and Los Angeles, claiming that the armed forces is essential to fight violence and protect immigration agents.

Data indicates that most violent crime across the US has declined in recent years. In Chicago, for instance, murders were reduced 31% to 278 through late summer, according to law enforcement reports.

A recent poll released on that day revealed that the majority of US citizens disapprove of the sending of military forces without an foreign danger.
