The Legendary Anime Ends a 27-Year Era in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for ongoing anime, with the production studio announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and featured numerous non-canon storylines. Starting in January, once the current storyline wraps up, the animated series will go on a quarterly hiatus until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.

Updated Production Plan

From now on, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. The studio explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the ONE PIECE world — including more material, tempo, and timing of the original manga.” However, Toei end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which suggests more One Piece content, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The One Piece anime had a half-year pause that began in late 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The hiatus was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the manga to build a lead to prevent a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to supply viewers with numerous action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. According to the news, this may result in one episode of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with others instead covering one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for time.

It's the end of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to ditch the old-school way of production, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. It's the reason why iconic series such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with one or two maximum releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the source material.
