A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” declared the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also raised ongoing questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the situation "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
