Major Lessons from the Champions Cup's Initial Set of Fixtures

Now that the initial matches of the 2025-26 Champions Cup concluded, we delve into the key revelations highlighted by the games.

Gallic supremacy has defined the competition in the past few campaigns, with the previous five victors all calling home France's top flight. But, the opening round included multiple impressive wins from potential challengers.

Bordeaux Appear Primed to Defend Their Title

Defending champions Bordeaux Begles were imperious in this tournament last season, dominating Toulouse in the last four and afterwards Northampton in the showpiece.

Positioned sixth in the Top 14, doubts have been raised about their chances of defending the feat this season. Yet, in their opener, Bordeaux sent a message that they are more than capable of securing another trophy with a points-laden win on the road in South Africa.

Given a challenging fixture at Loftus Versfeld against a powerful Bulls side including stars like Willie le Roux, Handre Pollard, and Canan Moodie, they were behind 33-22 at the interval.

However, true to their champion status, they displayed their class in the second half, roaring back to seal a 46-33 victory – holding the Bulls without a point after the break.

Les Bleus stars machines Damian Penaud and star wing Louis Bielle-Biarrey both got on the scoresheet. Any outfit with such firepower on the edges has a chance against any opponent.

Formidable Bath Seem Poised of A Deep Run

Bath's only triumph in this competition dates back almost 30 years ago. Throughout the ensuing period, they have arguably not been more prepared to add a second star.

The defending English Premiership champions are top of the pile in the league after six games and will be aiming to carry that momentum into the Champions Cup – particularly following a surprise group-stage exit the previous season.

Johann van Graan's team looked a highly composed and composed outfit in their 40-14 victory against Munster, who are third in the URC.

They marry creative spark – earning the extra point in under 20 minutes at the Rec – with tough tackling, holding their visitors at arm's length when they attempted a fightback.

With stars such as Finn Russell and Ben Spencer directing play and strength in depth all over the roster, they are surely credible threats for a first European trophy since 1998.

Bath's pivotal moment in the initial phase last season was in the following week, an heartbreaking 22-21 setback at Benetton with a squad players.

Now with a league trophy in their history and top in England once more, Van Graan could be inclined to place greater emphasis on the Champions Cup this season.

Glasgow Give Sale a Tough Start

There are strong teams in every pool, but the first group appears poised to be one of the most fiercely contested.

In the tournament's current format, a lot is made about victories on your own turf, which is why Glasgow's away victory at Sale on the first day might just prove crucial.

The Scottish side were two scores behind after 20 minutes but responded with character, and two tries during the beginning of the second period gave them a all-important five points.

With this result, they provided their prospects of qualification a positive start and, by contrast, dealt a significant setback to Sale.

With the red and blacks – imperious 56-19 victors over the Sharks – and Saracens, who brushed aside Clermont, also in the pool, we are likely to see many thrilling contests.

And regarding Glasgow's old rivals Edinburgh? They produced one of their finest displays in Europe in recent memory to surprise three-time winners Toulon 33-20, on a successful weekend for Scottish rugby.

Is Ioane the Final Piece of the Leinster Puzzle?

When considering a contender you would fancy to be in the mix at the later stages of the season in Europe, it would be multiple champions Leinster.

But in recent campaigns it has ended in disappointment, as they have been favourites but not won the trophy. Runners-up three years in a row between 2022-24, they looked overwhelming favourites last season after building on a 62-0 thrashing of Harlequins in the round of 16 with a 52-0 win over Glasgow in the last eight.

It was believed that All Black star Jordie Barrett would be the final piece to win the championship, but they were caught out and experienced a surprise defeat to Northampton Saints in the semi-final.

Now they are bringing in another Kiwi, this time with Rieko Ioane, who registered a scoring pass on his bow in Saturday's 45-28 victory against Harlequins.

Will Ioane prove to bring the trophy back to Ireland for the first occasion since 2018?

Stormers Appear Ready to Step Up

From the moment the SA franchises joined the Champions Cup in 2022-23, the furthest any of their teams have got is the last eight, and the previous season not a single one managed to make it out of the group stage, with plenty of weakened teams used.

Will this be the campaign that changes? The Stormers are first in the URC and began their continental journey with a 26-17 victory on the road at Bayonne on the opening night.

The words from players and coaches were promising too, with individuals involved talking about their aspirations, and the caliber of Springboks Cobus Reinach, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, and Damian Willemse unavailable for the opening victory.

The Stormers seem the most likely contender for a team from South Africa to go deep into the tournament, but do not rule out the Sharks and Bulls, who were defeated this weekend but did meet the French powerhouses respectively.

The English and French Sides Deliver a Classic Encounter

There were a few contenders for match of the round, and that clash was a leading candidate.

Pau have been experiencing a brilliant season, spearheaded by stars Julian Montoya and Facundo Isa and former Wasps scrum-half Dan Robson.

They are currently second in the French championship and the crowd was raucous at the Stade du Hameau|their home ground|Pau's
