Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users buying these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a return to starting mass within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The study, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Rebound
Doctors believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
