Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series against the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his message to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, after the opener scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this game."

Australia Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in only 11 days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any notion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is noise externally. There's no chat of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
