British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.

The facility, located using intelligence, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels leading to the facility... early reports suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation late on Saturday and all the aircraft returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - alternatively referred to as Daesh - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "They were among a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the American forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
